Polio is incurable but can be prevented early on by providing complete polio immunization.

Polio does not show specific symptoms. Generally, the symptoms of polio are similar to having the flu for 2-3 days. Then the symptoms continue with fever, headache, sore throat, nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain and muscle pain. The more severe a person has polio, the more extreme the symptoms will be. Such as pain in the neck, piercing tingling, seizures, decreased reflexes to weakened muscles.

Types of polio immunization

There are two types of polio vaccines: injectable polio vaccine (IPV) and oral polio vaccine (OPV).  The Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV) uses a weakened polio virus and is given by dropping it into the mouth of the child. The injectable polio vaccine (IPV) uses the inactivated (dead) polio virus and is given by injection in the arm or thigh of the child.

How many polio immunizations

WHO recommends a combination of 4 doses of drip polio immunization and 2 doses of injectable polio immunization. The dose of polio vaccine for children is 0.5 ml. The first dose is given to newborns in drops (oral polio vaccine). Then, the next vaccine IPV is recommended to be given twice before the age of 1 year. The second dose of IPV is given at 9 months of age simultaneously with measles-rubella immunization.

Polio vaccine drops are given 4 times at the age of 1,2,3,4 months. The injectable polio vaccine is given once when the baby is 4 months old. While children who have not received the polio vaccine at all, must be completed immediately for 5 immunizations. Children can also get a booster vaccine at the age of 18-24 months and 5 years.

Side effects of polio immunization

Each vaccine has different effects on each child. It is possible that this polio vaccine has side effects.
