Every October 10, we commemorate World Health Mental Day 2023. This Mental Health Day aims to raise awareness about the importance of maintaining mental health in everyone around the world.

Launching from WHO, World Mental Health Day 2023 carries the theme "Our minds, our tights" or "Our thoughts, our rights". World Mental Health Day 2023 is an opportunity for people and communities to unite under the theme "Mental health is a universal human right" to increase knowledge, raise awareness and encourage action that provides protection of everyone's mental health as a universal human right.

Mental health is a fundamental human right for all people. Everyone, whoever and wherever they are, has the right to the highest attainable standard of mental health. This includes the right to be protected from mental health risks, the right to available, accessible, acceptable and good quality care, and to freedom, independence and a community approach.

Good mental health is vital to our overall health and well-being. However, one in eight people worldwide live with a mental health condition, which can affect their physical health, well-being, the way they relate to others, and their livelihoods. Mental health conditions also affect a growing number of adolescents and young people.

Having a mental health condition should never be a reason to deprive someone of their human rights or exclude them from making decisions about their own health. Yet around the world, people with mental health conditions continue to experience a range of human rights violations. Many are excluded from community life and discriminated against, while many more are unable to access the mental health care they need or can only access care that violates their human rights.

WHO continues to work with its partners to ensure mental health is valued, protected, and to act as quickly as possible so that all people can exercise their human rights and access the quality mental health care they need. (Aq/MKK)
